Risk management careers in India — why 2026 is the turning point
Three forces are making risk management one of India's fastest-growing finance careers: RBI's tightening of risk frameworks at banks, the DPDP Act (India's GDPR equivalent) creating compliance demand, and rising cyber risk at every mid-large organisation. Risk managers earning above ₹20L were rare five years ago — in 2026, they're increasingly common.

FRM certification — India guide 2026
FRM (Financial Risk Manager) by GARP is the most respected risk qualification globally. In India, it's required or strongly preferred for:
- Chief Risk Officers (CRO) at banks, insurance companies, large NBFCs
- Risk managers at any RBI-regulated entity above ₹12L salary
- Credit risk — retail lending, wholesale banking, project finance underwriting
- Market risk — treasury, derivatives desk, ALM
FRM Part I tests: Foundations of Risk Management, Quantitative Analysis, Financial Markets & Products, Valuation & Risk Models. Part II tests: Market Risk, Credit Risk, Operational Risk, Liquidity Risk, Risk Management & Investment Management. Pass rate: ~45–50% per part. Most people take 6–12 months per part.
DPDP Act compliance — the new risk category
India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023 is creating a new compliance risk category. Every company that processes personal data of Indian residents must: appoint a Data Protection Officer (DPO), implement data minimisation and consent management, respond to data principal requests within defined timelines, and report breaches within 72 hours. Penalty for non-compliance: up to ₹250 crore per breach.
The IIM Indore Executive Programme in AI & Cybersecurity (NIRF #8 Mgmt) is currently the only IIM-branded programme that explicitly covers the DPDP Act alongside cybersecurity governance. Highly relevant for CISOs, DPOs, and compliance officers.
